RATS! had a booth at the expo held at the Sturbridge Host Hotel. This gave us the unique opportunity to spread the word about the concepts of zero waste to visitors interested in health from around the region. We were able to collect the signatures of hundreds of concerned Massachusetts residents ecouraging the state to keep the incinerator moratorium and instead pursue Zero Waste concepts like increased recycling, composting, and producer responsibility. This year, RATS! also had a booth in the EcoKids Discovery Zone portion of the expo where we did a recycling sorting activity to teach children which items they should be recycling and composting at home. They all signed petitions to the top 3 toy companies asking them to make their products 100% recyclable or compostable. We also provided a composting craft where children filled a compostable cellulose bag with with soil, ripped up newspaper and a red wiggler worm. Instructions for a home composter they can make from kitchen scraps was attached.
